(What Are Scanty Periods?)

Scanty periods mean having very little menstrual blood flow. In medical terms, it is called Hypomenorrhea. Normally, a woman loses about 30-80 ml of blood during her periods, but in scanty periods, the blood flow is much less. Sometimes, it lasts only one or two days, and the flow is very light.

Scanty Periods: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment Options

What Causes Scanty Periods?

There are many reasons why a woman may experience light periods. Some common causes include:

1. Hormonal Imbalance

If hormones like estrogen and progesterone are not balanced, the periods become irregular and light. This can happen due to:

  • Stress
  • Poor diet
  • Too much exercise
  • Thyroid problems

2. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS is a common condition that affects hormones. Women with PCOS may have irregular or scanty periods due to hormone imbalance.

3. Birth Control Pills

Taking birth control pills can reduce the amount of bleeding during periods. Some women may experience very light periods or even skipped periods.

4. Uterine Scarring or Infections

If a woman has had surgery, an abortion, or an infection, the uterus may develop scar tissue. This can reduce menstrual flow.

5. Low Body Weight or Excessive Exercise

Women who are very thin or do a lot of exercise may stop ovulating. This leads to less bleeding during periods.

6. Pregnancy or Breastfeeding

Some women may experience spotting instead of normal periods during pregnancy. Breastfeeding mothers also have light or no periods for some time. Read More:- (Pregnancy symptoms in Hindi: गर्भावस्था के शुरुआती लक्षण)
