IVF or IUI which one is better for you?

Difference Between IUI & IVF

Two of the most common fertility treatments are intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF). If you are having difficulty conceiving a child naturally, you may want to consider fertility treatment options. Normally, you’ll have some questions about what these treatments can do and how they differ. At BabbyBloom IVF Centre/Fertility Center in Gurgaon, our doctors guide you through IUI and IVF, how it works, and what the difference is.  So that you can know which option will be best for you in the journey of becoming a parent.

The Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) Process:-

During the IUI (or artificial insemination) process, the intended father’s sperm is inserted into the intended mother’s or surrogate’s uterus once or twice in the days after she ovulates. By injecting sperm directly into the uterus, IVF increases the chance that the sperm and egg will meet to form a fertilized embryo. The use of high-concentration quality sperm increases the chances of successful conception.

Pros and Cons of IUI:-

IUI is often chosen because it takes less time and usually costs less than IVF. During the IUI process, the male partner’s (or donor’s) sperm is inserted directly into the uterus. This process coincides with the female partner’s ovulation. Intrauterine insemination is generally recommended for women under 35 years of age because women in this age group have a higher success rate than women over 35 years of age. IUI in women aged 40 years or older, has the lowest success rate, with only 5%.

It is also important to note that IUI can be combined with the use of fertility drugs to stimulate ovulation, so the risk of multiple births (twins or more) is higher. If IUI is unsuccessful, women often opt for two to three rounds of IUI before attempting in vitro fertilization.

The In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Procedure

In vitro fertilization is one of the most prevalent and successful fertility treatment methods used today. As I mentioned earlier, if three or more rounds of IUI fail, our doctors recommend IVF. In this method, fertility drugs are used to stimulate the ovaries, which stimulates the production of more than one egg at a time. Once the eggs are sufficiently mature, the eggs are retrieved and fertilized by sperm in the laboratory. The resulting embryos are then transferred into the uterus.

Why Intended Parents Use IVF

Generally, the success rate of IVF is higher than that of IUI. This is the most recommended method for women above 40 years of age.  Additionally, IVF gives fertility specialists and intended parents greater control over the number of embryos transferred into the uterus, reducing the risk of multiple births. However, IVF requires more fertility drugs and has higher associated costs. IVF process is more expensive than artificial insemination, so consult your fertility specialist.

How To Decide Between IVF and IUI

The best way to find out if IUI or IVF is right for you is to consult a fertility specialist. Ultimately you can make the right decision for you, but your doctor can make expert recommendations based on your age, health, and the cause of your infertility. Typically, younger couples see more success with IUI, so they may be better candidates for the service. However, this can be costly if fertilization is not successful and multiple rounds of IUI are required.
