IUI treatment is used primarily in the following cases:-

IUI treatment is used primarily in the following cases:-

  • Mild male factor infertility
  • Male Ejaculatory Disorders
  • Unexplained Infertility This is when the physicians cannot determine a specific cause for the inability to get pregnant.
  • Unreceptive cervical mucus- In this case, the cervical mucus existing around your cervix blocks the sperm from reaching the uterus and fallopian tubes.
  • Serodiscordancy- This means that both the parents are suffering from either HIV or hepatitis.

The intrauterine insemination treatment method is known to have a first cycle success rate of approximately 18-20%.

Intrauterine insemination procedure This procedure involves introducing a washed and concentrated semen sample into a woman’s uterus, when around the time of rupture readiness or right when the egg has ruptured within the last 24 hours. A hoped-for outcome of intrauterine insemination would be for the sperm to swim into the fallopian tube and fertilize a waiting egg, thereby resulting in pregnancy. Normally within one menstrual cycle, a woman can grow one egg. However, in cases where she is undergoing medication, there is a possibility of more than one egg, thus raising the chances of success. IUI can be coordinated with your normal cycle or with fertility medications depending on the reasons for infertility.
Preparation of semen sample and precautions:-

The method of preparing a semen sample differs with every sample. Normally the sample is prepared by what is termed as double density method. It would be best to reach the clinic at least 1-2 hours prior to your procedure so enough time is given to prepare the sample and one gets a good count and motility sample.

Most IUIs do not require any type of anaesthesia. However, it is completely safe and can be up to personal choice if one wishes to get it done under sedation or anaesthesia.

A urine pregnancy test or blood pregnancy test will tell if the IUI procedure has been successful. Depending on whether the treatment has resulted in success or not, your doctor will help guide you in your next course after the procedure.
